Baldur
Son of Frigg and Odin, Baldur was also reportedly handsome and fiercely brave. He was associated with light and cheerfulness. He was known as the god of love, truth, and light. The only substantial myth concerning him is the story of his death and the attempts to resurrect him. Baldur married the goddess Nanna, and their child was Forseti, who later became the god of justice.
Baldur had long hair and a coarse beard. While he was masculine and handsome, Baldur was not an aggressive god, which made him well-liked by all. Depictions of him often show him as an attractive man who is armed with a spear and a shield, but these are usually not held in his hands as if for combat, but they are rather lying on the ground.
Living in a palace called Breidablik, Baldur and his wife Nanna were popular among the Midguardians. Baldur was known to possess knowledge of runes and herbs, which he used to heal the sick and injured.
Baldurâs Death and Attempts at Resurrection
Baldur was considered the fairest of the gods, and such was his pleasant nature that all loved him. When he suddenly began having troubling dreams of his own death, he spoke to his mother Frigg, who was a powerful sorceress and goddess. She instantly turned to Odin, Baldurâs father, and implored him to find out what these dreams meant.
Odin knew a dead seeress who dwelt in the underworld (Helheim), and dressed in a disguise as a wandered, Odin rode upon his eight-legged steed, Sleipnir, down to the depths of Helheim. Reaching the cold and desolate realm of Helheim, Odin was amazed to see a feast had been laid out, as if expecting some important guest. He began questioning the seeress, who happily told him they were awaiting the arrival of a prominent guest who was sure to die soon. She was about to tell Odin how the guest was supposed to die when she looked at Odin and wondered at the panic in his questions. Finally, she only revealed that the guest was Baldur, but she refrained from saying how the godling was going to die.
Crestfallen, Odin returned to Asgard and related all that he had learned to Frigg, who was inconsolable upon the news that her beloved son would die. In desperation, Frigg traveled to all of the realm, begging and securing promises from every living thing that they would not harm her son. Even the rocks and sand gave their consent that they would not harm Baldur. He became invincible.
Such was his new power and safety from harm that the other gods would make a sport out of throwing anything they could lie their hands on at Baldur, watching these bounce harmlessly off him. Nothing could harm Baldur, it seemed.
Of course, Loki wouldnât approve of such a sport, unless he was the maker of it, so he decided to wreak havoc. Donning a disguise, he asked Frigg if she had really gotten all things to give their consent not to harm Baldur.
